Olmsted Falls High School
Perrysburg High School –
Bulldogs Get Past Perrysburg 1-0
Leminâs 2nd Half Tally Lifts Dogs Over Yellow Jackets 1-0
The Bulldogs ran into a hot goalie and a talented defense minded team in the Perrysburg Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon at Perrysburg but found a way to bring home a victory.
Senior Kevin Lemin found the net with a left footer from an in-stride pass delivered by senior Sam Kasputis with 12 minutes remaining in the match. The Dogs held an advantage in offensive chances but found the Yellow Jackets up to the task defensively. Senior Shelby Edwards racked up shutout number four on the season and stopped 6 shots.
The Bulldog defense used speed and physical play to thwart several offensive runs by Perrysburg, most resulting from counter attacks after the Dogs pushed forward on offense. Senior Chase Fernkorn ran down any fliers and junior Alex Kleck added some SWC muscle in the middle. Senior Mark Ortiz created several chances with fine runs out the midfield.
The Dogs traveled to the fine soccer complex in Perrysburg on a cool overcast Saturday afternoon and after jousting with the Jackets for 10 minutes began to pressure them offensively. The Dogs appeared to get fouled in the box on a run and shot but official signaled âplay onâ.
Olmsted Falls created a high quality fast break and the shot hit side of net. Senior Ryan Kolonick put two shots on goal in the first and found the Jacket keeper ready with saves. The Jackets began to drop back two extra players in response to Bulldog pressure. The Dogs work rate slowly increased but the half ended with Perrysburg defending a Bulldog free kick yellow unsportsmanlike call on Perrysburg and the score 0-0.
The Bulldogs found the Perrysburg netminder off his line three minutes into the 2nd half and nearly converted. An alert defender knocked away a shot by senior Rylan Wikle. Wikle sent the ensuing corner kick into the mixer but came up empty. A poor back pass by the Bulldogs led to fine save by Edwards. Senior Dan Cleary sent a strong shot just over the net as the Bulldogs grew frustrated by the resilient defense of Perrysburg. The Dogs finally found net 28 minutes in the match when senior Sam Kasputis hit Kevin Lemin with a pass in stride. Lemin collected the ball, paused and sent a low left footer past behind an over-committed GK and defenders to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead they didnât relinquish.
The Bulldogs return to action this Wednesday night 7pm at OFMSC as they host rival North Ridgeville Rangers. Ridgeville is off to a good start in SWC play and always give the Bulldogs a spirited match. Expect another bruising SWC battle Wednesday.
