Bulldogs News · 2019 – 2020 OHSAA State Wrestling Bulldog Recognition

On March 26, 2020, the Ohio High School Athletic Association acted on the safety and security of all citizens by officially canceling the 2019 – 2020 winter sports tournaments.

As this information was announced, this ended the season for our Bulldog Wrestlers.  Three of those underclass wrestlers will return to the 2020 – 2021 season, but one has ended his career.  Senior – Captain Justin Jaeckin will graduate from Olmsted Falls High School in June and will look to further his educational and possibly his athletic career at the next level.

We are extremely proud of all of our student-athletes both in the classroom, and on their playing surfaces, but we will miss the leadership, expertise, and all-around quality teammate in Justin.  We certainly wish Justin and his family well as they have been fantastic Bulldog Supporters!

We would like to take this opportunity to recognize the two-state qualifiers and two state alternates who sacrificed, trained, and were truly committed to their sport.

Please see below on our four Bulldog State Wrestlers:

Justin Jaeckin

Grade Level:  12th

Weight Class:  220

2019 – 2020 Record:  36-5

SWC Accomplishments: 4x SWC placer, 2020 SWC Champ

Sectional Accomplishments:  4x sectional placer. This year sectional runner up

District Accomplishment:  2x district placer. This year District runner up

Post Graduation Plans:  I plan to attend either the University of Toledo or Cleveland State University to obtain a degree in engineering.

Justin’s Comments:  I was hoping to be the top three and possibly state champ this year. This year was a lot of fun. From cheering on my teammates and watching them improve to playing baseball before every practice, we all had fun and truly bonded. I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, and family for helping me get this far.

From Coach Burkhard:  Justin was, without a doubt, one of the best wrestlers in the state.  Justin had a great season and really put an exclamation point on it at districts with three straight first period pins to punch his ticket to the State Wrestling tournament.  He was a great leader on and off of the mat, and I could always count on him.  Justin finished his career with 138 career wins and is second all-time with 74 career pins.

Nate Urry

Grade Level:  10th

Weight Class: 145

2019 – 2020 Record:  29 – 12

SWC Accomplishments:  SWC Champion

Sectional Accomplishments: Sectional Champion

District Accomplishment: 4th Place

Nate’s Comments:  I was hoping to place in the top 7 at the state tournament.  My season had its ups and downs but made me a much better wrestler. I would like to thank my coaches, parents, and teammates for getting me where I am.

From Coach Burkhard:  Nate approached his opponents the same way all year-  He just kept attacking with his shots from start to finish, and he was hard to score on from any position.  Only a sophomore, it will be fun to see what all he can accomplish in the next 2 years.

Brandon Burkhart

Grade Level:  11th

Weight Class:  152

2019 – 2020 Record:  37-10

SWC Accomplishments:  Runner Up

Sectional Accomplishments: 3rd

District Accomplishment:  5th

Brandon’s Comments:  Even though it ended rough it was overall a good season. Thank you to all of my coaches and teammates, I think I made big improvements from last year because of their help. Next year I plan to keep improving and become a state placer.

From Coach Burkhard:  Brandon had a fantastic season.   He was very dangerous and has the ability to pin his opponent from any position.  Brandon lead the team with 37 wins this year.  Brandon’s bracket at Districts was one of the toughest weights there.  Fifth place was a great accomplishment.  Next year, I look forward to him improving on that finish.

Jerry White

Grade Level:  11th

Weight Class:  285

2019 – 2020 Record:  29-13

SWC Accomplishments: 3rd at SWC for two years

Sectional Accomplishments:  2nd

District Accomplishment: 5th

Jerry’s Comments:  I hoped to get into the tournament, if not then I wanted to have a good time and watch some wrestling. The season was great. I would like to thank my coaches and teammates for this great season. It was sad to watch Justin’s and Stang’s last matches, and knowing that would be me. Overall, great season and ready for next year.

From Coach Burkhard:  Jerry has improved by leaps and bounds during these past 3 years.  He put together a great junior season and finished as a state alternate.  Next year, we look forward to him anchoring our upper weights.

Although we are sad on how the winter season ended, this does not take away from the fact that the wrestling program had an outstanding season.  With a runner up finish in both the Southwestern Conference and the OHSAA Sectional at Strongsville High School, we are very proud of the effort that our athletes and coaches put into this season and the tremendous support by our Bulldog Families.  We appreciate the time, dedication, and commitment that everyone has placed into the sport.  We will miss our seniors and their families and at the same time, we will adequately prepare and look forward to the offseason, summer camp trip, and the start of the 2020 – 2021 season.

Congratulations Bulldogs and Best Wishes to all!
