Olmsted Falls High School
Bulldogs Rally Late To Clip Eagles 3-2 In Sectional Final
Senior co-captain Ryan Kolonick knocked in the go ahead tally with 10 minutes remaining in the match after the Bulldogs erased two different deficits in a wild affair in front of a large student section at the Olmsted Falls Middle School Soccer Complex.
Senior co-captain Kevin Lemin brought the Dogs even with two second half goals after Eagles took the lead twice during the match on a perfect evening for soccer. Senior GK Shelby made 7 saves and won his 15th game in a busy night between the pipes. The Bulldog defense bent but did not break as they quelled the Eagles for the last 10 minutes of the match.
The North Olmsted Eagles employed a 4-5-1 formation and a high work rate to grab a 1-0 lead then they cashed in a PK chance only 9 minutes into the match. The Dogs slowly unraveled the five midfielder formation but the Eagles energy and quick passing game kept the match even. The Eagles commitment to defense thwarted most Bulldog journeys into the box although the Dogs slowly began to win the possession game. The Eagles work rate allowed them to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Bulldogs struck quickly on the 2nd half when Lemin took a pass from senior Charlie Watters and caught the Eagle net minder off his line. Lemin beat the keeper and rolled in a shot to even the match at 1-1. The Eagles found some rhythm on offense and kept the Bulldogs in their end long enough to convert a throw in and take the lead 2-1. The Bulldog senior leaders found another gear and began to mount offensive pressure. After a high shot from senior Joe Bement and Charlie Watters the Dogs work rate began to pay off.
Chase Fernkorn sent a long freekick into the mixer. Kolonick headed the ball to Lemin and he headed the ball far post into the net to knot the score 2-2 as the large gathering roared their approval. Feeding off the energetic student section the Bulldogs were not finished. Lemin grabbed a pass at midfield took it to the 20 and laid out a pass for Ryan Kolonick. Kolonick used a burst to separate his defender and sent a sharp angle left footed shot inside the far post to grab a 3-2 lead with 10 minutes left as the crowd went wild.
The Eagles fought back and battled the Bulldogs for the final 10 minutes in typical SWC bare knuckle style. A yellow card and an injury timeout later the Bulldogs finally ran down the clock and took home a tough sectional final victory 3-2 to advance to the District Semi-Final against the Avon Lake Shoremen this Wednesday evening 7pm at OFMSSC.
Many Thanks to Bulldog Nation and a large noisy student section to help fuel the 2nd half comeback! Let bring that energy again Wednesday!
