Bulldogs Defense Stands Down St. Edwards Eagles 2-0 For 15th Win

Fernkorn and Cleary Back the Defense with Key Goals

The Bulldogs found themselves in a bruising battle with the St. Edward Eagles from the opening whistle and brought home an important road win on the last regular season match of the year, defeating a motivated Eagles squad 2-0 on St. Edward Senior Night.

Seniors Chase Fernkorn and Dan Cleary knocked in key goals and the defense turned aside several high quality chances by St. Edwards as the Dogs won for a team record 15th time during the regular season. Senior Shelby Edwards made 7 saves, three of them special saves, to ring up his 14th shutout and 15th win of the year.

The Bulldogs have rattled off nine straight blank slates behind a vise grip defense that was tested on a warm beautiful night at St. Edward High School on the turf. The Bulldogs foiled the long ball strategy of St. Edwards but not without some work and using the cross bar as an extra defender when Cleveland State commit, senior Tom Palitani got behind the back line and hit the bar with a shot. The Eagles tried the through ball extensively in the 1st half but met the same fate as many other teams and could not score on the Bulldogs. Mark Ortiz did an excellent job stopping the forwards of St. Edwards from flanking runs with his speed and physical play. Chase Fernkorn and Alex Klek kept Palitani in check and added some nice counter runs as well.

The Bulldogs recovered after bumpy first five minutes, and wasted several good chances with offline shots and fine play by the Eagle GK. Kevin Lemin missed wide and forced two excellent saves in the first half by the keeper. Rylan Wikle and Ryan Kolonick started numerous counters deep into Eagle territory to force Eagle defenders to work overtime. The game seemed headed into half scoreless when the Bulldogs forced a corner kick with less than two minutes remaining. Wikle sent the kick over the box and when the Eagles failed to clear the ball Fernkorn deflected it into the net for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

The 2nd half found heavy exchanges and fouls with two yellow cards and numerous players hitting the turf on both teams. The Eagle’s best chance came 5 minutes into the 2nd half when Edwards deflected a hard shot over the crossbar. The Dogs took away the Eagle direct pass and settled into a grueling midfield battle and counters into Eagle territory. The Bulldogs finally hit pay dirt on a counter when Lemin went deep baseline and found Cleary at the 4 yard line. The senior knocked it home and put the match into the win column for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs finish the regular season at 15-1 and will use a 1st round bye to rest and heal up some bumps and bruises. The final two matches were playoff intensity as teams brought their best game against Olmsted Falls. The Dogs return to the home pitch on Oct 21st 7m for their opening round playoff match against winner of Elyria/N.Olmsted. Congratulations to Coach Walchanowicz and his team for a record setting 2017 regular season.
