Olmsted Falls High School
Avon Lake High School
Bulldogs Secure 2nd Straight SWC Crown Over Avon Lake 3-0
Bulldogs Defense and Big 2nd Half Trigger Back to Back Titles for Olmsted Falls
The Olmsted Falls Bulldogs wore down the talented and spirited home turf defense of the Avon Lake Shoreman with three 2nd half goals to grab their 1st ever back to back SWC Soccer titles on a warm night at Avon Lake High School. The Shoreman fought off several high-quality chances in the first half and nearly took the lead with a dangerous cross into the Bulldog box late in the 1st half. The Shoreman took in a 0-0 halftime score complete with usual street fighting of an important season SWC match.
The high work rate of the Bulldogs was evident in the opening minutes of the 2nd half when senior Mark Ortiz shot just wide and senior Charlie Watters put a long left footed volley on frame. The Bulldogs abandoned the long ball strategy offered by the Shoreman defense in the 1st half and started to make deep runs Avon Lake territory. After receiving a nice pass from Ryan Kolonick, Senior Rylan Wikle drove past defenders to nearly the back line and slipped a left footed pass over to senior Kevin Lemin. Lemin drove a left footer into top netting and Bulldog Nation erupted in cheers as the Dogs led 1-0.
The Shoreman showed fight and countered several times but kept running into the defensive firm of Fernkorn, Klek, Bement, Ortiz and Le. Juniors Alex Kleck and Noah Le along with senior midfielder Joe Bement use positioning and anticipation to prevent any runs through the middle. Seniors Chase Fernkorn and Mark Ortiz run down any flanking chances and start counter runs as well. Senior Goalie Shelby Edwards directs traffic and used a strong kicking leg to keep the Shoreman defending the midfield.
Senior Captain Ryan Kolonick used a blistering run to beat two defenders to the back line and find Charlie Watters making a run to the door step. Kolonick hit Watters in stride with a thigh high pass as Watters was taken down in the box. The senior one timed the ball into the top netting with his right foot as he went down for a sparkling goal and a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
The Bulldogs sensed a chance to finish the match and one minute later Lemin found Wikle in the box and Wikle scored from close range for an unsurmountable 3-0 lead and final margin of victory.
The Dogs took a couple more shots and then possessed the ball as time ran out on their defense of the 2016 SWC title. Shelby Edwards took home shutout #11 and the Bulldogs improve to 12-1 on the season.
The Bulldogs return home after three road wins to celebrate Homecoming this Saturday in a 12-noon Homecoming match versus the Parma Redmen.
