Bulldogs Rally Late Past Southview Cougars 2-1
Watters Hits Game Winner With 4:15 Left After Ortiz Ties Game
Your Olmsted Falls Bulldogs Menâs soccer team traded blows with Sylvania Southview in a bareknuckle battle on the pitch Saturday afternoon and prevailed 2-1 on a clutch 76th minute goal by senior halfback Charlie Watters.
Senior halfback Mark Ortiz evened the match at the 70th minute with a tracer shot goal from 15 yards out in a wild but bruising 2nd half of Futbol. Senior Shelby Edwards turned away a last second shot by the Cougars to grab his 6th win of the season on 5 saves. The Bulldog defense showed toughness and speed turning away most the Cougar counters.
The visiting Sylvania Cougars brought a full contact style of play to the OFMS Soccer Complex and nearly took home a win on sunny, blustery afternoon match. The Dogs matched the Cougars blow for blow in a match marred by four yellows for the Cougars and numerous heavy collisions between players on both teams. The Sylvania defense withstood numerous quality shots and deep high-quality runs by the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defense delivered their usual vise grip coverage and kept the ball delivered up to the offense most of the afternoon.
The game started out promising for the Dogs with senior Ryan Kolonick hitting a left footed shot deflected over the bar 7 minutes into the match after probing the Cougar defense with long balls early on. Senior Kevin Lemin shot high on fast break and had two other shots stopped by the Cougar GK as the Dogs bored in the first 20 minutes of the half. Junior Brandon Chapman took a short free kick and forced a fine save by the Sylvania keeper. The game got rougher as the Cougars tried to slow down the Bulldogs attack. After two corner kicks, the Cougars scored on a free kick as the ball deflected off of the wall and found its way into the net. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the half.
The 2nd half found the Dogs firing away on offense and absorbing more body shots from the Cougars as they dropped back nine players and tried to hang on their one goal margin. After another yellow card restart around the 40, senior back Chase Fernkorn played a perfect pass into a charging Mark Ortiz. Ortiz let a rocket shot fly as a defender converged and found the net as Bulldog Nation went wild.
Reenergized, the Bulldogs kept attacking as senior forwards Rylan Wikle and Kolonick made repeated runs into the Sylvania box and delivered high quality crosses that somehow stayed out of the net. The Bulldogs went long ball however to gain the game winner in this grueling match. Kevin Lemin grabbed a pass near midfield and lofted a 50 yard floating pass as four Bulldogs charged the net. Watters settled the pass in the box with his left foot and popped in the goal ahead score with just over 4 minutes remaining. The Dogs survived a last second corner kick to improve the record to 6-1 on the year.
The Bulldogs hit the road this Wednesday for the grass pitch of Amherst High School in another important SWC battle as the Dogs seek to hold on to second place in the SWC, 1 point behind Berea Midpark.
