Olmsted Falls High School
Westlake High School
Demons Defeat Bulldogs With Last Minute Goal 1-0
The Olmsted Falls Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker 1-0 on a goal by the Demons with 1:13 remaining in the match. The Dogs had trouble clearing a cross and the Demons poked in the lone goal to win a hotly contested match at Lee Bureson Middle School field.
The game was a physical match with plenty of pushing and fouls. The Bulldogs spent the 1st 10 minutes countering long ball passes from Westlake and defending two high quality shots by the Demons at the four and six-minute mark. The Demons allowed crosses by senior Ryan Kolonick but defended the box well. The Bulldog midfield struggled all night connecting passes between the 40-yard markers and prevented many fast breaks by the Dogs.
At the 10-minute mark the Dogs settled in tacked. The dogs managed several productive crosses but didnât connect. Chase Fernkorn swept away a close range shot off a Demon corner rebound to keep the game scoreless.
The second half found the Bulldogs defending their end and unable to mount a consistent counter attack outside of occasional runs from their halfbacks Kolonick and senior Mark Ortiz. The Demons used counters and increasingly productive long balls to keep the Olmsted offense in check.
The Demons used back to back corner kicks to find a close-range shot saved by senior GK Shelby Edwards at the 3-minute mark. The game seemed destined for a scoreless draw. The Bulldogs just missed as senior Charlie Wattersâ shot veered inches from the net with under two minutes remaining. The Demon goal kick sailed down and produced a free kick that Westlake converted with just over minute left in the match.
The Dogs return to action this Wednesday at Home against another rugged SWC foe Lakewood Rangers.
The season is a long one and teams will be tested as the Dogs were tonight. Letâs get Bulldog Nation back in force next Wednesday versus Lakewood!
