The Varsity Bulldogs (14-13, 10-8) capped off the 2017 season with a 5-4 extra inning victory over the visiting Rangers. The game started play all the way back on April 20th before being suspended due to lightning in the bottom of the 8th of a 4-4 game.
Sophomore Jack Spellacy pitched 7 solid innings, striking out 7, before giving way to fellow sophomore Teddy Grendzynski who earned the win.
Prior to the lightning delay, the Rangers took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th inning. That’s when senior Collin Romel stepped to the plate and launched the 1st pitch he saw over the RF fence to tie things up. One pitch later the game was halted as the skies opened up, leaving both teams knotted at 4.
Fast-forward to yesterday, and the game was picked up in the 8th. The Bulldogs failed to plate a runner, and in the top of the 9th inning Grendzynski held the Rangers scoreless.
Junior Bret Asadorian got things going with a 1 out single, and he advanced to 2nd base on a balk.
After a flyout, sophomore Zach Vas was inserted into the lineup to pinch hit for the injured Braden Galaska.
In only his second varsity at-bat of the year, the sophomore came up huge with a line drive single that scored Asadorian from 2nd base to end the game.
The Bulldogs finish 2017 with a 10-8 record in the SWC, one of the toughest big school conferences in Ohio, and an overall record of 14-13.
The Bulldogs were slated to host Kirtland on Saturday for a doubleheader, but unfortunately the Hornets were forced to cancel the trip, thus bringing a close to the 2017 baseball season.
